Dramatis Personae

Name: Axel Demara

Age: Early-mid thirties

Profile: Axel subscribes to the same school of thought as P.T Barnum. He has set himself up as a private investigator who specializes in paranormal cases. As a result, he is regarded as a fake, fraud, and charlatan by those who know of him. Regardless, Axel considers himself an honest buisnessman although he's nowhere as clever as he likes to think he is.

"“There’s cheating in all trades but ours,” is the prompt reply from the boot-maker with his brown paper soles, the grocer with his floury sugar and chicoried coffee, the butcher with his mysterious sausages and queer veal, the dry goods man with his “damaged goods wet at the great fire” and his “selling at a ruinous loss,” the stock-broker with his brazen assurance that your company is bankrupt and your stock not worth a cent (if he wants to buy it,) the horse jockey with his black arts and spavined brutes, the milkman with his tin aquaria, the land agent with his nice new maps and beautiful descriptions of distant scenery, the newspaper man with his “immense circulation,” the publisher with his “Great American Novel,” the city auctioneer with his “Pictures by the Old Masters”—all and every one protest each his own innocence, and warn you against the deceits of the rest. "

Quote by: P.T. Barnum, The Humbugs of the World: An Account of Humbugs, Delusions, Impositions, Quackeries, Deceits and Deceivers Generally, in All Ages)

Name: Aysha (Ash) Crichton

Age: Early to mid thirties:

Profile: Aysha (who is also called "Ash") doesn't claim to have any paranormal abilities. But she doesn't claim anything to the contrary either. She is Axel's on-off buisness partner so she is also adept at con games, or at least as competent as Axel is (not very).  Ash also deals in selling very second hand, often outdated merchandise. These are mostly gadgets, hardware, and devices that may or may not be of some use to the aspiring adventurer.  Axel occassionally obtains some items from her "junk collection".  Ash doesn't claim to be an arms dealer either (she's actually a bit of a pacifist; could be read as "she just isn't very good at fighting"). Neither does she claim that the items she sells will always work as "advertised", given that many of them were experimental to begin with.

"All of us are living with dogmas that we accept as truths. When one of these is overturned, there's an initial gasp, soon followed by a rush of exhilaration."

Quote by:  Deepak Chopra (born 1946)

Name: Holden

Age: Unknown

Profile: Holden is an informant. He is a buffer between Axel and some clients who prefer to remain anonymous. He probably performs this service for different clients as well. So it's probable that "Holden" is not his real name.

"The scientific observer of Nature is a kind of mystic seeker in the act of prayer."

Quote by: Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938)

Names: Jenson (Left) and Gus (Right)

Ages: Unknown

Profile: Jenson and Gus (full names unknown) are agents or operatives for whomever owns the oil rig  I.S. Demeter. They are currently part of a mission to investigate an unknown object embedded in a drifting Arctic iceberg. They are, curious about the nature of their assignment but, naturally, they realize that they are not meant to know all of the details. This doesn't stop them from trying, though.

"Despite what we are being told is an ever more open world of communication, there is a terrible alienation in the ordinary man between what he is being told and what he secretly believes."

Quote: by John Le Carre ( born 1931)

Name: Charlie Kane

Age: Mid to late 30s

Profile: Charles F. Kane (as his ID card says) is an associate of something called the Special Intelligence Group. That may be a government organization. But it may not be.  He is called "The Agent" by Axel and Ash, who question the current relevance of his type of  authority. Mr. Kane seems genuinely interested in solving the mystery of the vanished prison inmates and staff at Gateway Penitentiary. He's not interested in (nor has any real respect for)  what Axel and Ash do as long as they don't get in the way of his investigation.

"The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown....To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three.”

Quote by Roger Zelazny (1937-1995) from Lord of Light (1967)
